Merchant Center (MC) is the gatekeeper. If your feed is broken, your PMax fails, your Shopping campaigns can't run, and you lose attribution.

Setting it up correctly takes 2–4 hours. Done right, you won't think about it again for months.

TL;DR

1. Create MC account.

2. Add and verify your business info.

3. Verify and claim your website.

4. Connect to Shopify or upload manual feed.

5. Configure shipping, tax, returns.

6. Submit and fix disapprovals.

7. Link to Google Ads and Google Analytics.

8. Set up promotions and reviews (optional but valuable).

Step 1: Create the account

Go to merchants.google.com → Sign Up.

Use the same Google account that hosts your Google Ads. Cross-account linking is much smoother.

Step 2: Business information

Fill in:

  • Business name: registered DTI/SEC name.
  • Country of registration: Philippines.
  • Time zone: PHT (UTC+8).
  • Currency: PHP (or USD if selling international too).
  • For multi-currency setups: create separate MC accounts per region or use multi-country setup.

    Step 3: Domain verification

In MC → Settings → Business information → Website.

    Verify via:

  • HTML tag in theme.liquid (Shopify).
  • HTML file upload.
  • DNS TXT record.
  • Google Tag Manager.
  • Google Analytics.
  • For Shopify: easiest is HTML tag via theme.liquid.

After verification, claim the URL — locks ownership.

    Shopify → Settings → Sales Channels → Google & YouTube → Install.

    Connect to MC. Shopify auto-syncs:

  • Product info.
  • Pricing (with currency).
  • Inventory.
  • Shipping (basic).
  • Manual feed setup is also possible (Google Sheets template) but Shopify auto-sync is much easier.

Step 5: Configure shipping in MC

This is where most PH operators get stuck.

Option A: Use Shopify shipping (simpler)

Enable "Get shipping rates from your store" in the Google channel. MC pulls from Shopify shipping zones.

Option B: Configure shipping in MC directly

    For more control:

    1. MC → Shipping & returns → Add shipping service.

    2. Set:

  • - Service name: e.g., "Standard PH Shipping."
  • - Country: Philippines.
  • - Delivery time: 1–5 business days.
  • - Rate: flat (₱120) or weight-based.
  • Add multiple shipping services:

  • Standard.
  • Express.
  • Free shipping over ₱X.
  • Important PH gotcha

MC requires you to define shipping for ALL the country, not just where you ship. If you only ship to Metro Manila, you still need a "Provincial" shipping option set up — even if it's a higher rate.

    Step 6: Configure tax

    In MC → Tax settings:

  • For PH, most stores aren't VAT-registered initially. Leave as "No VAT applicable."
  • If VAT-registered: set "Include VAT in price" matching your Shopify settings.
  • Don't have mismatched tax in MC vs Shopify — MC will flag price discrepancies.

    Step 7: Configure returns policy

MC → Returns → Add return policy.

  • Window: 7–30 days (PH typical 7).
  • Conditions: as per your Shopify return policy.
  • Method: refund, exchange, store credit.
  • This shows on Shopping listings as a "Returns" indicator. Builds trust.

Step 8: Submit feed and check approval

    After Shopify auto-syncs:

  • MC → Products → Diagnostics.
  • See approved, pending, disapproved counts.
  • Click into disapproved to see specific issues.
  • Common PH disapprovals:

    "Missing GTIN"

Most PH brands have no Global Trade Item Number. Solution:

In Shopify product → Google channel → set "Identifier exists: false."

Add brand and manufacturer name in product fields.

    "Image too small"

    Minimum 100x100. Recommended 800x800+. Re-upload in Shopify.

    "Image with promotional text"

Remove "SALE", "50% OFF" overlays from product images. Use clean product shots.

    "Price mismatch"

MC scrapes your live page. Price in feed must match price on the product page exactly.

If running a sale via discount code only (price unchanged): no mismatch.

If using compare-at price + sale price: ensure both are correct.

    "Inappropriate product"

    Some categories trigger review:

  • CBD/cannabis-adjacent.
  • Weight loss claims.
  • Adult products.
  • Some supplements.
  • Resubmit with cleaner descriptions if you're sure your product is allowed.

    "Account suspended"

    Worst case. Causes:

  • Fake or misleading product info.
  • Counterfeit goods.
  • Repeated policy violations.
  • Recovery:

  • Fix root cause.
  • Submit appeal in MC.
  • Wait 1–4 weeks for review.
  • MC → Settings → Linked accounts → Google Ads → Link.

Approve from Google Ads side. Once linked, you can create Shopping or PMax campaigns from your Ads dashboard.

MC → Settings → Linked accounts → Google Analytics → Link.

Provides better cross-attribution between MC, Ads, and analytics.

    Promotions setup

In MC → Marketing → Promotions:

    Create:

  • Free shipping promo.
  • % off sale.
  • Bundle promo.
  • Free gift.
  • These show as special icons on Shopping listings. Lift CTR 5–15%.

    Configure with:

  • Promotion title.
  • Code (if applicable).
  • Time period.
  • Eligibility (product range, minimum order, etc.).
  • Reviews integration

    Two options:

    Google Customer Reviews (free)

Auto-collected post-purchase via Google. Embed badge on your site.

Setup: MC → Marketing → Customer Reviews → Apply.

    Third-party reviews (Loox, Stamped, Yotpo)

Sync reviews from your existing review platform to MC. Requires manual feed configuration.

Reviews appear as star ratings on Shopping listings. Critical for premium positioning.

    Feed health checks (monthly)

    Once a month:

  • Check % of products approved (should be 95%+).
  • Audit disapprovals — fix systemic issues.
  • Update product titles for keyword optimization.
  • Verify pricing accuracy.
  • Check shipping rates still accurate.
  • What to do this week

If you don't have MC set up:

    1. Day 1: Create MC, verify domain.

    2. Day 2: Connect Shopify, configure shipping, returns, tax.

    3. Day 3–5: Fix disapprovals as they surface.

    4. Day 7: Link to Google Ads, launch first Shopping or PMax campaign.

Most stores get to 95%+ approval within 7–10 days.

    Common mistakes

    1. Skipping domain verification

    Feed won't process without it.

    2. Mismatched pricing

Sale prices that change daily without feed update.

    3. No shipping configured

MC won't approve products without shipping.

    4. Ignoring disapprovals

Each disapproved product = invisible to Shopping. Fix systematically.

    5. Not linking to Google Ads

Without the link, you can't build Shopping campaigns.
