Shopify Checkout Optimization: 14 Fixes That Lift Conversion

Most Shopify stores lose 60–70% of buyers between cart and confirmation page. Here are the 14 changes I make on every store I optimize — measured, tested, and stacked.

The product page brought them in. The checkout is where most stores quietly bleed revenue.

The average Shopify store I audit has a 60–75% checkout abandonment rate. Get that down to 50% and you've effectively doubled your ad spend efficiency without spending another peso on traffic.

Here are the 14 fixes I make on every checkout I optimize, ranked roughly by impact.

TL;DR

The five highest-impact moves:

1. Enable Shop Pay accelerated checkout.

2. Trim the checkout to one page (Shopify Plus) or remove all unnecessary fields.

3. Add explicit trust signals at the payment step.

4. Show the total cost (with shipping) BEFORE checkout.

5. Recover abandoned carts with email + SMS within 1 hour.

The other 9 fixes compound on top of these.

Fix 1: Turn on Shop Pay

Shop Pay's accelerated checkout converts 1.7x better than guest checkout, on average. Filipino consumers who have Shop accounts will checkout in 2 taps.

Settings → Checkout → Customer accounts → "Accounts optional" with Shop Pay enabled.

Fix 2: Show the total upfront

If shipping or VAT is added later in checkout, abandonment spikes. Either:

  • Bake shipping into the product price (free shipping over X), OR
  • Show shipping calculator on the cart drawer/cart page.
  • Customers hate surprises at the payment step.

    Fix 3: Reduce form fields

Shopify checkout has fields you can hide. Audit which are actually required:

  • Make Company optional or hide entirely.
  • Hide Address Line 2 if you sell single-unit products.
  • Don't collect phone unless you NEED it for delivery.
  • Each removed field is a small but real lift.

    Fix 4: Pre-fill where possible

Shopify auto-fills returning customers. Make sure your accounts setting allows accounts (set to "Optional"). Browser autofill should work — test with Chrome and Safari.

Fix 5: Add trust badges at the payment step

Add accepted payment icons (GCash, Maya, Visa, MasterCard, JCB) AND a small "Secure SSL Checkout" badge. Customers in PH still hesitate at payment.

Use Shopify's checkout extensibility (checkout.liquid replacement) to inject this on Plus, or use Vitals' trust badge feature on non-Plus.

Fix 6: Show order summary on mobile

On mobile, the order summary collapses by default. Many customers don't realize it's there. Customize your checkout to keep the summary expanded for first-time visitors.

If you can't change this (non-Plus), add a sticky "View order summary" button at the top of mobile checkout.

Fix 7: Free shipping threshold messaging

If your free shipping threshold is ₱1,500, show progress messages everywhere:

  • Cart drawer: "Add ₱350 to unlock free shipping"
  • Cart page: same
  • Checkout (Plus): "₱350 away from free shipping"
  • Vitals or Shopify's Shipping Threshold app handles this.

Fix 8: Add a cart drawer instead of full cart page

Most Filipino stores still use a full cart page. A cart drawer is faster: customers add to cart, see drawer, click checkout — without a full page reload.

Most modern themes have a built-in cart drawer. Turn it on.

Fix 9: Show estimated delivery time

"Order in the next 2 hours and get it by Wednesday" beats "Standard shipping 3–5 days" every time.

Use a delivery date estimator app (or build it yourself) that shows a real date.

Fix 10: COD as a payment option (PH)

If you don't allow COD, you're losing 15–30% of PH first-time buyers. Yes, it has fulfillment costs and refusal risk. Still worth it.

Cap COD at orders below ₱5,000 to limit refusal exposure.

Fix 11: Express checkout buttons at cart and product page

Add Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay express buttons:

  • On every product page (above-the-fold, near the main CTA)
  • On the cart drawer
  • On the cart page
  • These shave 30–60 seconds off purchase time.

Fix 12: Order bumps at checkout (Plus only)

If you're on Shopify Plus, add a one-click order bump on the payment step. "Add a 30-day battery for ₱200?" type offers convert at 8–15%.

Use Shopify Plus's checkout extensibility or apps like ReConvert (which works for non-Plus, but at the post-purchase step).

    Fix 13: Post-purchase upsells

After the customer pays, before they hit the thank-you page, offer one well-matched upsell. ReConvert or Selly handle this without disrupting checkout.

    I've seen +12–18% AOV from a single well-placed post-purchase upsell.

Fix 14: Recover abandoned carts (Klaviyo + SMS)

Set up an Abandoned Checkout flow in Klaviyo:

  • 1 hour after abandonment: Email 1 (gentle reminder, no discount).
  • 24 hours: Email 2 (highlight the product, social proof).
  • 48 hours: Email 3 (10% off code, time-limited).
  • Then layer SMS for high-AOV products: 1 SMS, 4 hours after abandonment.

This single sequence often recovers 15–25% of abandoned revenue.

    How to measure your checkout

    In Shopify Analytics:

  • Conversion funnel → Cart → Reached checkout → Reached payment → Sessions converted.
  • Check abandonment between each step.
  • Mobile and desktop separately — they're different problems.
  • In GA4:

  • Funnel report: ViewItem → AddToCart → BeginCheckout → AddPaymentInfo → Purchase.
  • Stacking the fixes

Don't deploy all 14 at once. You won't know what worked.

    A reasonable sequence:

  • Week 1: Shop Pay + cart drawer + free shipping messaging.
  • Week 2: Trust badges + estimated delivery + COD.
  • Week 3: Post-purchase upsell + abandoned cart flows.
  • Week 4: Form trimming + express checkout buttons.
  • Track conversion week over week. Most stores will see 15–35% lift over 60 days.

    What about Shopify Plus checkout?

Plus unlocks full checkout customization via checkout extensibility. If you're past ₱1M/month, the lift on Plus is real:

  • One-page checkout
  • Custom payment-step blocks
  • Branded checkout layouts
  • A/B testing native to Shopify
  • Below ₱1M/month, Plus rarely pays back its $2K+ subscription.

    What NOT to do

  • Don't add discount-code fields you don't use. Customers see them and search for codes elsewhere — cart abandons.
  • Don't add account creation as a required step.
  • Don't throw a popup ON the checkout page. You'll torch conversion.
  • Don't use multi-page checkouts on non-Plus. Native Shopify is one page; don't fight it.
